The Division of Human-Environmental Science approaches such familiar issues as clothing, drinking water, architecture, and medical welfare from the standpoint of science and engineering in an aim to discover ways to resolve problems. Students in the division will study practical applications of scientific technology, timely initiatives toward issues in lifestyle-related fields, and applications in and evaluations from society regarding the outcomes of research.
In discussing culture, there are a variety of humanities-based fields and approaches including art, philosophy, literature, and history. The Department of Cultural Historical Studies crosses the boundaries of each of these areas and takes an interdisciplinary approach to the discussion of culture associated with people‘s daily lives.
The target of studies comprises not only food, clothing, and shelter but also philosophies related to design, feng shui, romance, marriage, family, and anything else affiliated with culture. The Department of Developmental Clinical Psychology conducts practical research for the development and creation of knowledge that links clinical psychology sites and child care sites in an organic way. It offers studies in developmental psychology, clinical psychology, child care studies, pedology and child sociology as well as related methodologies.
Students will learn the fundamentals of psychology required at actual sites through practical training involving experiments, observation, interviews, psychological testing and questionnaires, and develop the ability to understand children and communicate in a manner appropriate to child care through observational training at the university‘s attached kindergarten and nursery.
A multitude of problems surround us such as increases in irregular employment, poor labor conditions, medical and care-giving systems in societies with a low birthrate and an aging population, discrimination, inequality, poverty, domestic violence, child abuse, and the challenge of work-life balance. The Department of Social Sciences and Family Studies approaches such social issues from the standpoint of ordinary people and the quality of everyday-life, and analyzes these issues using legal, political, economic, and sociological research methods as well as through the framework of gender research, and develops ways to resolve these issues.
