11.09.2017 Update
Ochanomizu University celebrated the completion of its main entrance gate’s restoration on September 7, 2017. The doors of the main gate, which faces National Route 254 (Kasuga-dori), were removed for metal scrap during the Second World War, and were replaced with doors incorporating steel pipe on March 23, 1955.
While the gatepost light fixtures underwent repairs and the gate doors were replaced once after they were built, Ochanomizu University left the other parts untouched and maintained them as a protected (historical) structure.
The remaining restoration of the main gate followed the conservation repairs to registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan: the university’s Main Building, Auditorium, and the Ochanomizu University Kindergarten building. The original design of the gates was re-created, and bollards were installed on the sidewalk along the road.
The commemorative ceremony was held in front of the gates. Guests of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) were invited to the ceremony. The personnel from the university and its affiliated schools, including University President Kimiko Murofushi, attended as well. The ceremony proceeded in a genial atmosphere.
