Finding Employment in Japan

Obtaining job-seeking information

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) publishes a guidebook containing essential information for international students to seek employment in Japan. You are recommended to read the guidebook, as it explains in an easy-to-understand way by process from preparation, application for a job, screening for hire, and changing your residence status.

Online editions are available in English, Chinese, and Korean, and Japanese.

Participating in career fairs

Information on employment guidance is posted regularly on bulletin boards inside and outside the Student Service Building, for you to check when necessary. The Student and Career Support Center holds employment guidance and workshops for international students, and job application preparation courses specifically for international students several times a year. Visit the office for further information.

Procedures to change your residence status

To work full-time in Japan, you must change your current “Student” residence status of your visa to one that permits work, such as “Specialist in humanities/international services” or “Engineer.” Apply for permission to change your residence status at the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. For required documents to be issued by the University, some can be obtained on the same day at an automatic issuing machine, while others take several days after you apply. Allow sufficient time when making preparations. Screenings for changing your residence status usually take from one to three months. For details, refer to the link below.

Even if you cannot find work before graduation, you can remain in Japan and continue job-seeking for up to one year by applying to change your residence status to “Designated activities (to continue job search after graduation).” For details, inquire with the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
